Celebrating English Week: A Festivity of Language and Creativity

Every year, we celebrate English Week, an event whose importance cannot be overstated. At Manresa School, the festivities began on November 19, 2024. This year’s theme was: "Read, Dream, and Celebrate English as a Global Language: Bridging Cultures, Connecting the World to Grow in Faith, Hope, and Love." The English teachers prepared various activities that inspired, entertained, and enhanced students' language proficiency.

Highlights of the English Week:

Window Festival
Held on November 27, 2024, this activity showcased students' creativity. Pupils decorated a section of their classroom windows based on a theme assigned to each section. All Grades 1–6 participated, and the results were a testament to their imagination and teamwork.

Tongue Twister Challenge
This classroom-based activity ran during Reading classes from November 20–26 and was a crowd favorite. It provided a fun and interactive way for students to practice and improve their pronunciation. Students from Kinder to Grade 6 enthusiastically joined in.

Book Donation Drive
This activity combined fun with generosity during lunch breaks on November 26–27. Pupils brought their pre-loved storybooks as "payment" for accessing the photo booth, watching a film, or participating in the Joyous Hour. The donated books were sent to chosen schools across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Kinder to Grade 6 pupils actively participated in this meaningful event.

Little Teachers
From November 20–22, selected intermediate pupils (Grades 4–6) took on the role of “Little Teachers” by visiting primary pupils during their Language classes. They taught Language lessons and created a memorable learning experience for both groups.

Book Character Comes Alive
On December 5, 2024, pupils from the primary and intermediate levels brought their favorite book characters to life by dressing up in creative costumes. The event was colorful and exciting, showcasing the students’ love for reading.

Student Reactions

The English Week activities left a lasting impression on many students. Here’s what some of them had to say:

  • My opinion about English Week is that it was a pretty good school activity. My favorite was the Book Character Comes Alive because we got to express our love for our favorite book characters by dressing up as them.” - Liam Ballada
  • “I enjoyed all the activities, but my favorite was the Window Festival. It allowed students to be creative and have fun at the same time.” - Matthew Cano
  • “The English Week activities were super fun and exciting! My favorite was the Photo Booth in the Donation Drive. We were able to donate our pre-loved books and take amazing pictures with our friends.” - Sofia Aguilar

The English Week celebration concluded on December 5, 2024, with the Culminating Activity. Highlights included the Chamber Theater and the Declamation Contest, where students displayed their language skills and confidence. English Week was more than just a celebration; it was an opportunity for students to develop confidence as English speakers while enhancing their listening, reading, and writing skills. This annual event continues to inspire a love for language and learning in every student.
